AwakeningFrontCoverSmall copy

Synopsis

…because some Celtic stories won’t be contained in myth.

A little magic has always run in sixteen-year-old McKayla McCleery’s family—at least that’s what she’s been told. McKayla’s eccentric Aunt Avril travels the world as a clairvoyant for the FBI, and her mother can make amazing delicacies out of the most basic of ingredients. But McKayla doesn’t think for a second that the magic is real—it’s just good storytelling. Besides, McKayla doesn’t need magic. She just moved to beautiful Star Valley, Wyoming, and already she has an amazing best friend, a solo in her upcoming ballet recital, and the gorgeous guy in her physics class keeps looking her way.

When an unexpected fascination with Irish dance leads McKayla to seek instruction from the mute, crippled, janitor at her high school, she learns that her family is not the only one with unexplained abilities.

After Aunt Avril comes to the valley in pursuit of the supernatural killer that she has been chasing her entire career, people in the valley begin disappearing, and the lives of those McKayla holds most dear are threatened. When an ancient curse, known as a geis, awakens powers that defy explanation, McKayla is forced to come to terms with what is real and what is fantasy.

A thrilling first novel, Awakening is a gripping contemporary fantasy rife with magic, romance, and mystery.

Cover Reveal: Panic by Lauren Oliver

This morning, Lauren finally revealed the cover of her newest book, Panic, which has an expected publication date of March 2014.

Panic_HC_JKT_des4.inddPanic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.

Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She’d never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.

Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game, he’s sure of it. But what he doesn’t know is that he’s not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.

For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them—and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

I’m so excited for this. I loved Before I Fall and the Delirium series, so I’m sure that Panic will be just as excellent. The synopsis makes me think of The Hunger Games a little bit, and Panic seems like something that the boys in my town would play since it’s about the same size as Carp and also has next to nothing for teenagers to do. I’d be the one person in town that doesn’t play and just watches from the sidelines, though – I’m afraid of snakes, spiders, clowns and falling, so you couldn’t pay me enough to be put in a situation involving any combination of those!

For a sneak peak at chapters 1-3, check out the videos on Lauren’s Goodreads page here. While you’re there, don’t forget to add Panic to your to-read shelf!

Cover Reveal: Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy

Yesterday, the cover for Julie Murphy’s debut novel Side Effects May Vary was revealed, and it looks wonderful!

8What if you’d been living your life as if you were dying—only to find out that you had your whole future ahead of you?

When sixteen-year-old Alice is diagnosed with leukemia, her prognosis is grim. To maximize the time she does have, she vows to spend her final months righting wrongs—however she sees fit. She convinces her friend Harvey, whom she knows has always had feelings for her, to help her with a crazy bucket list that’s as much about revenge (humiliating her ex-boyfriend and getting back at her arch nemesis) as it is about hope (doing something unexpectedly kind for a stranger and reliving some childhood memories). But just when Alice’s scores are settled, she goes into remission.

Now Alice is forced to face the consequences of all that she’s said and done, as well as her true feelings for Harvey. But has she done irreparable damage to the people around her, and to the one person who matters most?

Julie Murphy’s SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY is a fearless and moving tour de force about love, life, and facing your own mortality.

If that’s not enough to convince you to add Side Effects May Vary to your to-read list, here’s a teaser:

Harvey laughed to himself in a sad way and rubbed his eyes. “You want me to help you with a list of things you won’t disclose to me.” He leaned forward and bit the skin around his thumb. “Classic.”
“You won’t regret it.”
“But—”
“Harvey,” I said, my voice low. “Trust me.”
I knew what this looked like. It looked like I was using Harvey. But here was the reality of the situation: the minute my life went from semi-permanent to most likely temporary, I decided to latch on to everything in my world that had always been permanent, and for me, Harvey was so permanent he was concrete.

I’ve been hearing so many good things about this book from many different book blogs, so I can’t wait to read this! The plot reminds me a bit of the beginning of Paper Towns by John Green (which I love), it’s non-linear and told from both Harvey and Alice’s perspective (which is perfect; I always find myself wondering what other characters are thinking too), and the author seems adorable and quirky, which is sure to come across in her writing.  March 2014 cannot come soon enough!

Cover Reveal: Perfect Ruin by Lauren DeStefano

This morning, US Weekly revealed the cover for Perfect Ruin by Lauren DeStefano. It’s set to be published this October, and is the first book in The Internment Chronicles.

ImageOn Internment, the floating island in the clouds where 16-year-old Morgan Stockhour lives, getting too close to the edge can lead to madness. Even though Morgan’s older brother, Lex, was a Jumper, Morgan vows never to end up like him. She tries her best not to mind that her life is orderly and boring, and if she ever wonders about the ground, and why it is forbidden, she takes solace in best friend Pen and her betrothed, Basil.

Then a murder, the first in a generation, rocks the city. With whispers swirling and fear on the wind, Morgan can no longer stop herself from investigating, especially when she meets Judas. He is the boy being blamed for the murder — betrothed to the victim — but Morgan is convinced of his innocence. Secrets lay at the heart of Internment, but nothing can prepare Morgan for what she will find — or who she will lose.

I loved the Chemical Garden Trilogy (which you definitely should read if you haven’t already), so I’m beyond excited for this new series. Based on the teasers from Lauren’s twitter, the synopsis itself, and the review that Beth Revis posted on Goodreads, it looks like Perfect Ruin will definitely be worth reading.
