Blog Tour + Giveaway | Following Zippy by C.B. Burdette

Today, I’m excited to be participating in a blog tour for Following Zippy by C.B. Burdette.

At fifteen most kids only have to worry about their homework or the style of their shoes. Gabe Perkins isn’t most kids. When diagnosed with a terminal illness, he begins to make friends with a girl so ethereal, he starts to question his own sanity.

Excerpt:

“Look at those fish,” she said, diverting her attention towards the creek. “What about them?” “They’re just swimming along. Living and breathing. I wonder,” she said as she nudged her shoulder against mine, “if they know what purpose they serve.” “Well, they probably don’t.” “Why’s that?” “Because, they’re fish?” “Don’t think so low of the marine species.” “Zippy, they’re little minnows. They’re so little they probably only live a few months. Why worry about their place in life?” “I don’t know. Something of the simplicity of them is nice, though, you must admit.” She gleamed ear to ear, “Imagine, if you were a little minnow, swimming down the creek.” “Oh, crap.” “What?” “Do you really think there’s something out there that really cares about those little fish? Or even, you know, if something out there is looking down at us, talking about us like we’re little fish? As if we’re just tiny little minnows swimming down a stream, unsure of what fate lies ahead of us?” “I do.”

About the Author:

I grew up a gypsy at my parents hands. With a dad in the Air Force, I got to experience life on the road, soaking up culture. After spending 6 years working as a model, I realized that the industry wasn’t much of what I was looking for in life. More often than not I felt like Jo Stockton in Funny Face and escaped into the world of film, where your job is based on something more than beauty. Though I do love 12 hour days on set, there’s nothing like snuggling up with a warm laptop and letting my fingers dance away to create a whole new world.

playingwithmatches_tour14 (1)

When 16-year-old Raina Resnick is expelled from her Manhattan private school, she’s sent to live with her strict aunt — but Raina feels like she’s persona non grata no matter where she goes. Her sister, Leah, blames her for her broken engagement, and she’s a social pariah at her new school. In the tight-knit Jewish community, Raina finds she is good at one thing: matchmaking! As the anonymous “MatchMaven,” Raina sets up hopeless singles desperate to find the One.

Can she find the perfect match for her sister and get back on her good side, or will her tanking grades mean a second expulsion? In her debut novel, Suri Rosen creates a comic and heartwarming story of one girl trying to find happiness for others, and redemption for herself.

My Review:

Playing With Matches immerses readers into an Orthodox Jewish community, which is something that I am incredibly unfamiliar with. As a result, I was a bit wary about giving it a read; after all, what if all of the references go completely over my head? Thankfully, my fears were completely unfounded. The narration was both interesting and informative, allowing me to follow the story with ease.

Rain was an easy character to sympathize with. Her narration was quirky and cute, and I loved watching how her role as Matchmaven changed her from a self-absorbed teenager to someone considerably more considerate. I also enjoyed how Rain was not given a love interest; the focus of the story was on her relationship with her family and clients, and I feel as though her involvement in a romantic relationship would have taken away from that.

Overall, Playing With Matches was a cute, light, fun read. I look forward to seeing what Suri Rosen writes next!

Thanks to ECW Press for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Teaser: Dangerous Boys by Abigail Haas

I’m so excited to be promoting Abigail Haas’ Dangerous Boys, which is set to be released on August 14th! After hearing so much praise for Dangerous Girls, I can honestly say that I’m excited to give this one a read!

From the critically-acclaimed author of DANGEROUS GIRLS comes a new dark, twisted thriller…

“It all comes down to this: Oliver, Ethan, and I.”

Three teens venture into an abandoned lake house one night. Hours later, only two emerge from the burning wreckage. Chloe drags one Reznick brother to safety, unconscious and bleeding. The other is left to burn, dead in the fire. But which brother survives? And is his death a tragic accident? Desperate self-defense?

 Or murder?

Chloe is the only one with the answers. As the fire rages, and police and parents demand the truth, she struggles to piece the story together – a story of jealousy, twisted passion and the darkness that lurks behind even the most beautiful faces.

Early Praise:

“Dangerous Boys is a taut, compelling thriller balanced on the razor’s edge of suspense. I could not put it down, and could not stop grinning wickedly as I raced through the pages.” — Leah Raeder, USA Today bestselling author of Unteachable

“Abigail Hass is a master at her craft! This is a special book and a special author. This is the kind of storytelling and writing that stick with you no matter how much time passes.” — The Book Geek Blog

“As with Dangerous Girls, the closing left me with a huge, admittedly rather twisted smile on my face. I don’t know how Haas manages to turn me into such a gleefully evil creature.” — Dahlia Adler, blogger.

“Dangerous Boys was an intense, psychological read which was full of suspense and drama,…Abigail Haas has a way of writing books which reel you in and keep you there, hooked and addicted until the very last page.” — Goodreads.com

Blog Tour: Mine To Spell by Janeal Falor

About this time last year, I read and reviewed a book called You Are Mine, which I really enjoyed. I’m excited to announce that I’m taking part in the blog tour for it sequel, Mine To Spell, and that I’m lucky to be hosting Janeal Falor, who will be sharing a short guest post on what music was her inspiration for this story.

While I typically do my writing in silence, music has a big impact on my creative process before I write. It gets me in the mood and helps me to feel the things my characters will feel. The Mine series is tricky to get songs that fit it, though. Most music is too modern or too upbeat or just too not right.

While preparing to write You Are Mine I listened to a lot of classical music and The Piano Guys. But that mix just didn’t feel right for Mine to Spell. At all. I searched for something else, but nothing ever came until I heard “Brave” by Sara Bareilles and dun, dun, duuuunnn! That was it! Not only does it work for the entire series, but they really fit Cynthia’s story perfectly. Plus, in addition to being a fantastic song, I think it has a great message for us all.

About the Book:

Title: Mine to Spell (Mine #2)
Author: Janeal Falor
Publication Date: May 5, 2014
Genre: YA Fantasy

Cynthia has always hidden from her father’s hexes behind her older sister. When her family gains independence unheard of for women, she’s relieved that her days of harsh punishments are over. But as her seventeenth birthday approaches—the typical age to be sold to a new master—death threats endanger her sisters. She now faces two options: run or meet society’s expectations.

For once, Cynthia isn’t going to let her older sister shield her from the problem. She’s going to prove to herself, her sisters, and society that her family isn’t a threat to their traditions. She willingly chooses to be purchased by a new master. A bold step that takes her somewhere she never thought she would go and to a man she might possibly fall in love with. With his help, she may just find a way to save her sisters while discovering how to stand up for herself. If she lives long enough.

About the Author:

Amazon best-selling author Janeal Falor lives in Utah with her husband and three children. When it’s time for a break she can be found taking a scenic drive with her family, fencing, or drinking hot chocolate.

Guest Post: Ghosts by Brina Courtney

Hi everyone! I’m really excited to welcome Brina Courtney, the author of Reveal, to the blog for a guest post about one of my favourite topics: ghosts.

—–

Why have ghosts become this scary object we’re supposed to fear? I’ve never been afraid of ghosts, I’ve just always felt that they’re spirits who have unresolved business. I had never thought they wanted to hurt us until I started to watch scary movies. Then I, and I deduce you, became fearful of these translucent beings.

So here is what I have to say about that, don’t fear ghosts. Think about all the wonderful people who have died, I really don’t believe they’d be haunting you in such a horrible way. Ghosts have been turned into these gruesome monsters, by television and movies when really I think they’ve been misinterpreted.  But Hollywood is what it is and we can’t deny the American public seems to like watching people be chased by bloodied figures flying down the hall in the dark chasing the victim to their untimely death. We like the gore and the spooky feeling it gives us. Why? I really can’t tell ya. But how many times have you hidden under the covers because of a ghost story?

I think our biggest mistake is we consider demons and ghosts the same entity, but really they’re totally different. Demons are evil spirits or fallen angels and trust me, those are people I would be afraid of. Get your blankets friends, and keep the lights on if you have a demon attached to you!

But for now, light a candle and welcome the ghosts into our world.

About the Book:

Title: Reveal (Cryptid Tales, #1)
Author: Brina Courtney
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

You think seeing ghosts is weird? Tell me something I don’t know.

Shay Tafford’s childhood has been fatherless, filled instead with memories of speaking to the
dead. She is forced to hide her unique ability from those living around her. That’s why it’s been comforting to have Jeremy, a child ghost, as her confidante. But recently he’s been absent, perhaps lost as her father is. When Shay meets Hugh, the guy she’s had a crush on for weeks, and finds he can speak to ghosts too, she’s just starting to find a normalcy in her life.

But as Hugh reveals the truth to Shay, about who she really is and about what it is she can do, he erases all chances she had at a normal existence. Turns out talking to ghosts is just scratching the surface of her genetically engineered gifts. Shay learns she may be part of an age old prophecy that could save the entire race of cryptids. But can she?

Quotes

“So here I am with a dead girl in my car, in a super creepy forest, stalking a potentially dead father…yeah, not one of my brightest moments.”

“She sighs, “Shay you can’t live your life in fear. If you do there’s just no point in living.”

“He turns and leaves, heading towards the math building and though I hate to see him leave, I do love to watch him walk away.”

Excerpt:

Coming to my feet, I ran into the vault and found myself at the bottom of what seemed like three floors. It was filled with storage units, all next to each other. It reminded me of prison cells, each of them with their own armored doors. I smelled more smoke coming from above, so I ran up the first set of stairs and let my nose guide me. I saw the figure trying to melt one of the armored doors, and I launched myself at him. He was ready for me, though, so I found myself thrown across the room like a ragdoll. I pretended to be injured as he approached me, and when he was close enough, I kicked his feet from under him and he fell, hitting his head on the concrete floor. I jumped on him and pinned his hands down just as he looked up at me.

And there he was, Nick Logan. My ex-husband.

I stared at the face I’d once loved, now with a patch covering his left eye and scars running all the way down his jaw. They were almost hidden under his days-old beard and wild, dark hair. His deep hazel eye looked at me, empty, daring me to speak first. I punched him.
