Book Review: My True Love Gave to Me by Stephanie Perkins

My True Love Gave to Me was, for the most part, as adorable as I had expected. Like most anthologies, though, the stories were quite hit or miss for me: there were some that stood out (namely the ones by Rainbow Rowell, Stephanie Perkins, Laini Taylor, and Kiersten White) while others were less convincing and would have worked better as novellas or full-length stories. Despite that, the stories all intrigued me enough to add some previously unknown authors’ works to my ever-growing to read list, and reaffirmed my love for some of my favourite authors.

My True Love Gave to Me features characters from all sorts of backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a nice mix of contemporary and magical stories in this collection. While the stories were all quite different, they all captured several important aspects of the holiday season, most notably hope and love.

Overall, My True Love Gave to Me is a cute, quick read that captures the magical feeling that surrounds the holidays. I can certainly see myself rereading my favourites closer to the holiday season, and can’t wait to display this gorgeous cover on my bookshelf.

Top Ten Books I Wouldn’t Mind Santa Bringing Me

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week, she posts an idea relating to books and encourages other book bloggers to respond with their own top ten lists.

This week’s topic is “top ten books I wouldn’t mind Santa bringing me.” This is a list I actually make every year, since my family members never know what to get me for Christmas (I eventually gave up and made a wishlist on Goodreads, since I figured that was easier than trying to keep track of which books I’ve already told family members to buy me). But, anyways, here are a few of the books that I’d love to find underneath my Christmas tree:

1. The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan
I’ve been following this twitter account for ages, and every day it reminds me exactly why I desperately want to read this book: Levithan’s observations on love are beautifully phrased, often heartwarming, and incredibly relatable. I need to own a copy so that I can absorb these thoughts over and over and over again.

2. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
As I’m sure you all know by now, I absolutely adore Rainbow Rowell. As a result, I’m so sad that I haven’t gotten around to reading Fangirl yet. I mean, it’s been out for months! So Santa, if you’re reading this, please place a copy in my stocking for me. : )

3. The Killing Woods by Lucy Christopher
I fell in love with Christopher’s writing after reading Stolen: A Letter to My Captor a few years ago, and when I heard that she had a new murder mystery, it immediately had to go on my to-read list. Of course, the copy that my local library had ordered still hasn’t come in, so having my own copy would certainly spare me the long, long wait.

4. The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle
I’m in this huge contemporary romance phase for some reason (which is strange because I’ve never really enjoyed rom-coms…) and this book sounds like it’d provide me with the sweet, adorable relationships that I enjoy reading about.

5. Perfect Ruin by Lauren DeStefano
I really enjoyed The Chemical Garden Trilogy, so I have been looking forward to reading Perfect Ruin for months now. All of the good reviews from my Goodreads friends have only made me want a copy even more!

6. Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can’t Avoid by Lemony Snicket
I’ve checked this book out from my local library and renewed it so many times that I really need to invest in my own copy; it basically lives at my house, after all. Snicket’s dark wit and life truths are things that I need to carry with me on a daily basis – both for entertainment and motivational purposes.

7. Pivot Point by Kasie West
I just finished reading The Distance Between Us, and now I’m really curious as to how West would write a contemporary/sci-fi blend like Pivot Point. So many bloggers have highly recommended it, so I feel as though it’d be a present that I would definitely enjoy.

8. Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor
I read this for the first time a few years ago, and looking back, I can’t remember anything about it aside from the fact that it was worthy of a five-star rating. I really want to continue the series, which I hear is also quite excellent, however a refresher on the first book in the series is definitely necessary.

9. Just One Day by Gayle Forman
I can’t believe I haven’t gotten around to reading this one yet, considering how much I enjoyed If I Stay. I even have a copy of Just One Year sitting around at home as motivation to find/read this and everything!

10. The Year of Shadows by Claire Legrand
I love middle grade fiction, and this one just looks too adorable to pass up. Between ghosts, beautiful illustrations, and an all-around awesome author, I sincerely hope I receive a copy of The Year of Shadows in the near future.
