Author Interview:

Where did you get the idea for a story about grim reapers?

I absolutely loved the show Dead Like Me that was on Showtime many years ago. It was quirky but offered a different perspective on death. That’s what I was going for when I wrote Dead Girl Walking.

If you had the chance, would you want to become a grim reaper?

No thanks! I’d probably struggle a lot with following the rules. Actually, I’m positive I’d be kicked off (if that’s an option).

Can you tell your readers a secret about writing your Royal Reaper series?

Originally the story was going to take place in the 1300’s during the Black Plague along the Silk Road. It became overly complicated with where the story took place and there not being a kingdom nearby to have a princess actually exist. I wanted it somewhat to follow history, but it was too complicated (not to mention the archaic language). So, I opted instead to make it a paranormal fantasy, put the characters in a fantasy world and still have historical events parallel our past.

Do you think books should end with a happily ever after?

I prefer to read stories with happy endings. I’m okay if it’s a series and you’re going to torture my favorite characters and cause them lots of heartache at the end of book one or book two, but by the end of the series/story, I want a satisfying conclusion.

What other paranormal novels do you like?

Recently I was reading CC Hunter’s Shadow Falls series, which I’m in love with. I also love The Mortal Instruments series which falls between paranormal and urban fantasy.

Blog Tour: Mine To Spell by Janeal Falor

About this time last year, I read and reviewed a book called You Are Mine, which I really enjoyed. I’m excited to announce that I’m taking part in the blog tour for it sequel, Mine To Spell, and that I’m lucky to be hosting Janeal Falor, who will be sharing a short guest post on what music was her inspiration for this story.

While I typically do my writing in silence, music has a big impact on my creative process before I write. It gets me in the mood and helps me to feel the things my characters will feel. The Mine series is tricky to get songs that fit it, though. Most music is too modern or too upbeat or just too not right.

While preparing to write You Are Mine I listened to a lot of classical music and The Piano Guys. But that mix just didn’t feel right for Mine to Spell. At all. I searched for something else, but nothing ever came until I heard “Brave” by Sara Bareilles and dun, dun, duuuunnn! That was it! Not only does it work for the entire series, but they really fit Cynthia’s story perfectly. Plus, in addition to being a fantastic song, I think it has a great message for us all.

About the Book:

Title: Mine to Spell (Mine #2)
Author: Janeal Falor
Publication Date: May 5, 2014
Genre: YA Fantasy

Cynthia has always hidden from her father’s hexes behind her older sister. When her family gains independence unheard of for women, she’s relieved that her days of harsh punishments are over. But as her seventeenth birthday approaches—the typical age to be sold to a new master—death threats endanger her sisters. She now faces two options: run or meet society’s expectations.

For once, Cynthia isn’t going to let her older sister shield her from the problem. She’s going to prove to herself, her sisters, and society that her family isn’t a threat to their traditions. She willingly chooses to be purchased by a new master. A bold step that takes her somewhere she never thought she would go and to a man she might possibly fall in love with. With his help, she may just find a way to save her sisters while discovering how to stand up for herself. If she lives long enough.

About the Author:

Amazon best-selling author Janeal Falor lives in Utah with her husband and three children. In her non-writing time she teaches her kids to make silly faces, cooks whatever strikes her fancy, and attempts to cultivate a garden even when half the things she plants die. When it’s time for a break she can be found taking a scenic drive with her family, fencing, or drinking hot chocolate.

Excerpt:

Coming to my feet, I ran into the vault and found myself at the bottom of what seemed like three floors. It was filled with storage units, all next to each other. It reminded me of prison cells, each of them with their own armored doors. I smelled more smoke coming from above, so I ran up the first set of stairs and let my nose guide me. I saw the figure trying to melt one of the armored doors, and I launched myself at him. He was ready for me, though, so I found myself thrown across the room like a ragdoll. I pretended to be injured as he approached me, and when he was close enough, I kicked his feet from under him and he fell, hitting his head on the concrete floor. I jumped on him and pinned his hands down just as he looked up at me.

And there he was, Nick Logan. My ex-husband.

I stared at the face I’d once loved, now with a patch covering his left eye and scars running all the way down his jaw. They were almost hidden under his days-old beard and wild, dark hair. His deep hazel eye looked at me, empty, daring me to speak first. I punched him.
